Barcode Scanner Integration

Cherwell Mobile uses barcode scanning to access important CI details from a mobile device. For example, using the camera on a mobile device, you can scan a barcode sticker on a broken computer, then open that computer's CI record (from the CSM CMDB) to view its details. You can then link the CI record to another record, if needed (ex: Link the CI Record to an Incident on which you are working).

How the Integration Works

Before barcode scanning can be used by Cherwell Mobile, barcode awareness must be configured in CSM. Barcode awareness is achieved by adding simple attributes to scannable fields to make Business Objects aware of other scannable objects. Cherwell Mobile dynamically creates actions based on the barcode awareness. For example, if the Config-Computer Object is scannable, and the Business Object ID is added to the Incident’s BarcodeScan attribute, then the action Lookup Config-Computer (barcode scan) is available from mobile Incident records in Cherwell Mobile.

Note: Barcode Scanning Actions cannot be edited in CSM Administrator or in Cherwell Mobile.

Steps to Integrate

  1. Enable barcode awareness:
    1. Add a barcode field to an existing Business Object:
      1. In the CSM Administrator main window, click the Blueprints category, and then click the Create a New Blueprint task.

Note: If working on a saved Blueprint, open the existing Blueprint.

The Blueprint Editor opens, displaying the Object Manager in its Main Pane. The Object Manager lists the existing Business Objects.

    2. Select a CI Business Object (ex: Config-Computer), and then click Edit Business Object.
    3. Add a barcode text field (30 characters, but can be made longer if necessary).
    4. Add BarcodeScan as a General Attribute for the barcode field (Field Properties>Advanced page>General Attributes).
    5. Click OK.
  2. Link a CI to a Parent Business Object (so that the Parent is aware that the CI is scannable):
    1. Obtain the Business Object ID from the CI Business Object:
      1. In a Blueprint in CSM Administrator, click Bus Ob Properties for a scannable CI Business Object (ex: Config-Computer).
      2. Click the Advanced page, and then click the Business Object ID button.
      3. The Internal ID window opens.
      4. Copy the entire Internal ID.
      5. Click OK.

    2. Add the BarcodeScan attribute to the parent Business Object:
      1. In a Blueprint in CSM Administrator, click the Bus Ob Properties for the parent Business Object (ex: Incident).
      2. Click the Advanced page, and then add BarcodeScan as a General attribute.
      3. Paste the Internal ID (copied previously) as the value for the attribute.

Note: If there are multiple IDs, separate them with a semi-colon (;).
